Cataract

The eye's Natural Lens

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. The medical term for this condition is cataracts. The most common cause is age-related clouding of the lens. General health conditions such as diabetes can contribute to the development of cataracts.
A cataract means seeing as if through a frosted glass: colors fade, contrasts become weaker, and depth perception is severely limited. For those affected, this also poses a safety problem: driving, climbing stairs, finding a specific object can become more difficult and therefore more dangerous.

There are no drug therapies that can prevent or cure cataracts; the only solution is surgery. The introduction of new surgical techniques, new materials, new measurement methods, and new intraocular lenses has made cataract surgery much easier and safer in recent years.
